that the president would not be alerted to this fact? >> well, i can't speak for what is going on in the obama white house. bob mueller was my fbi director when i was the attorney general. i suspect at some point this summer bob mueller would have notified the attorney general. i have reason to believe general general petraeus is involved in an a extramarital relationship. now i would have taken that information, which i consider significant to the president quite frankly. i think the president would want to know that information. i think the president wants to know that the person who holds many of nation's secrets is engaged in conduct that reflects poor judgment. also, at the time, we now believe reporting is there was no breach of national security as a result of this relationship. i suspect in the summer we weren't really quite sure of that consequently it might be important for the president to know that in his conversations with david petraeus. for matters of national security i think this would be a reason why the president would want to know that the law enforcement community, that the fbi,

, that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. mostly a waste of time. as mr. obama did what he always does, provided long-winded answers to general questions. the first question from the white house press corps should have been very simple. exactly when were you told about general petraeus, mr. president? and why was this kept secret until after the election? simple. that's the kind of question s no wiggle room. instead, an associated press guy asked an opinion question rather than a fact question. allowing the president to dance. >> do you think that you, as commander and chief, and the american people should have been told that the cia chief was under investigation before the election? >> obviously, there is an ongoing investigation. i don't want to comment on the specifics of the investigation. the fbi has its own protocols in terms of how they proceed. and, you know, i'm going to let director muller and others examine those protocols and make some statements to the public generally. i do want to emphasize what i have said before, general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he se
